The Challenges of Peer and Self-Assessment

3/1/2018

For candidates working on Components 2 and 4, assessment that focuses on informing instruction and supporting student learning is the key. Two dimensions that are often a challenge include peer assessment and student self-assessment. Educators who integrate this effectively into their assessment repertoire demonstrate accomplished teaching practice.

If you're looking for some new strategies to bolster your own skills in this area, you might want to check out a couple of podcasts from the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development's (ASCD) BAM (an acronym for Body and Mind) Radio Network. The first, "Smart Ways to Integrate Student Reflection into Student Assessment," features an interview with Myron Dueck, vice principal and teacher from British Columbia, Canada, who shares some strategies featured from his book Grading Smarter, Not Harder: Assessment Strategies That Motivate Kids and Help Them Learn. You can access the podcast HERE.  In the second podcast, English teacher and journalist Starr Sackstein, who is a blogger for "Work in Progress" at Education Week, discusses ways to provide authentic, effective and actionable feedback to students. Listen to that podcast HERE.

Hope you enjoy and find these podcasts as useful as we do. If so, subscribe on your favorite podcast app so you can keep learning on the go!
